What it is

Local search is where neighbourhood businesses win.

To put a business on Google Maps, you need to create and verify a profile on Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business), and optimise it for local search. When someone searches restaurant near me or plumber in Faro, Google first shows a map with three local businesses - the so-called Local Pack. That's the pack that matters. Being there can be the difference between getting calls every day or being invisible in your own city.

In local marketing consultancy, I work the strategy with you to set up and optimise your Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business) and your presence on Google Maps. It's one of the digital marketing actions with the highest return for proximity businesses, and I give you the method to maintain that presence over time.

46% of all Google searches have local intent. For neighbourhood businesses, it's the most important acquisition channel.

Frequently asked

No mystery.

What is the difference between Google Maps and Google My Business?

They are two sides of the same strategy. Google Business Profile - formerly known as Google My Business - is where you manage your business listing, with categories, hours, photos and reviews. Google Maps is the map where that listing appears when someone searches nearby. Working the listing well is what makes you show up well on the map.

How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?

Creating the profile is immediate, but ranking well on the map takes weeks to months, depending on local competition. The upside is that local marketing typically has less competition than general SEO, so return tends to be faster.

Are reviews really that important?

Yes, very. Reviews are one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide who to show first in local search. Quantity, quality and recency of reviews directly impact ranking.
